Something that could make Mastodon safer and more pleasant to use would be reply controls.

This would optionally allow users to specify who can reply to their posts, so that people who experience abusive replies from bigots, trolls etc can pre-emptively prevent that happening.

It would also give people a middle option between follower-only posts and public posts.

If you're comfortable using Github, you can vote for this by giving a thumbs up at github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i

Mastodon's moderation could be greatly improved by a system to automatically flag posts containing certain words, phrases or links.

It would allow admins to instantly see problematic content (abuse, spam, etc) without having to wait for reports from users. It doesn't have to automatically take action, just flag it.

There's an existing issue in Mastodon's Github. If you are comfortable using Github, give it a thumbs up if you want this feature: github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i

Pitch A system of filter-matching local (or federated) messages on phrases, words, or maybe something more complex (like a regex), and auto report (or "flag") them for manual review. This is explic...

If you run a Mastodon server, you might want to switch on "secure mode" also known as "authorized fetch":

➡️ fedi.tips/authorized-fetch

When it's active, it makes your defederations more effective by preventing blocked servers from accessing your server's posts.

There's a good unofficial article describing what it does at hub.sunny.garden/2023/06/28/wh

It used to have a reputation for breaking compatibility, but I've been using it for several years and haven't encountered any problems.

Fedi admins, be aware that a lot of people who report abuse don't forward it to its original server because the official Mastodon app doesn't include this option.

If you're running a public Fedi server and you receive a report about a bad post, you might also want to report the bad post to yourself and make sure you've selected the option to forward it to the original server.

If the original server never receives a report, the spammer/abuser/etc will keep posting.

in case anyone is curious about the underlying cause of it being impossible to migrate a mastodon server from one domain to another, this limitation is due to the activitypub protocol itself, which (simplifying for brevity) uses the equivalent of absolute/hardcoded URLs for posts

@silverpill wrote this fediverse enhancement proposal that would allow for relative domain names. given that it was written a year ago, and with the molasses-like development the protocol has, i sadly suspect it's unlikely to be integrated any time soon.

holy crap: mastodon server does not support domain name changes. 😆

i now have to give some serious thought to migrating dialup.cafe -> dialup.party

it would mean setting up a new server from scratch, migrating users to the new server, and losing all of their post history in the process. i am truly dumbfounded at how bad this architecture is.

Is there a different account than @MastodonEngineering(@mastodon.social) to subscribe to in order to be informed about Mastodon security updates, specifically? Because that one plays entirely too much non-critical general project information into my notifications...

Every morning, I open the only proactive moderation tool available to #MastoAdmin folks, and every morning, I wish we had better tools. :blobfrowningbig:

The fact these accounts all use the username "J" and yet there is no way to search for that and only that? It's infuriating how little the leaders of this project care for the people keeping our servers online.

These problems are getting worse every month. Queer instance admins are growing especially exhausted. GIVE US TOOLS THAT WORK!

- Are you the admin on a public Fediverse server which has sign-ups open?

- Would you like your server listed on fedi.garden ?

- Is your server compatible with all seven points at fedi.garden/about-this-site ?

If so, please message me 🙂

(NOTE: It can be Mastodon or it can be other types of Fediverse server such as PeerTube, GoToSocial, Pixelfed etc.)
