I'm currently in the process of migrating my HashiCorp Vault over to k8s, and I've been thinking about my Kube config file. It's just sitting there, on my Command&Control host. If anybody gets in there, they've got full access to my k8s cluster.

So I'd like to secure basically the entire ~/.kube directory. Only 3 reqs:
1) Needs to be opened with a password
2) Needs to stay open for X amount of time before auto-closing again
3) Directory needs to be directly usable by kubectl

If I record myself reading a copyrighted book and share the recording with some friends (for free), is that copyright infringement?

If so, can I claim fair use by, idk, dressing up in a funny outfit or something and turning the reading into a performance art piece, which I then record and share?

Is it copyright infringement to extract the audio from said recording of such a performance art piece and share that? There must be a legal way to do this...

I occasionally use the phrase "not out of the woods yet" and only just realised I actually really like the woods, that's why I choose to live in a forest

Think I'm gonna have to switch to something like "not out of the meeting-that-could-have-been-an-email yet", though that's a bit of a mouthful. Or perhaps "not out of the weeds yet", but that's a bit bland

Anyone have any better ideas?

Hey Fedi 🙂 Internet search is garbage, so I'm hoping some of you can help. I'm looking to replace my office's cloud #backup software and looking for non-US options. I know of pCloud, any others you'd recommend?

Requirements:
* Client side encryption (ideally zero knowledge)
* Able to specify any number of folders to back up, ideally each with their own scheduling and ignore lists
* File history and deleted file recovery
* User controlled but company managed
* Device sync not necessary

Hmm my neighbours are drilling into my garage wall, and I’m ok with putting up trellis or whatever but also pissed off they didn’t ask and are just drilling my property without consideration of electrics or the water integrity of the building as it’s only single brick. What do I do! #AskFedi

🏕️ my adventures in #selfhosting - day 89 ✨

Oh #PeerTube, you are making me do mental somersaults as I strategize about the best way to self-host my videos.

This newbie wants to ask: how many VPS’s are too many for someone who has little coding experience and has been self-hosting for just 3 months?

Fedi friends, I’m thinking of signing up for a THIRD VPS 😱

Why?

My current setup:

1️⃣ 5€/month Debian VPS with #YunoHost, where I’m self-hosting #GoToSocial (this account), #Friendica, #Pixelfed, #Fail2Ban and #LinkStack.
2️⃣ 5€/month Ubuntu VPS where I am self-hosting my (upcoming) #Ghost blog (this will make me save a ton, compared to my current Ghost Pro plan).

Back to PeerTube: I could easily upgrade my #Debian VPS and install it there - the costs would be minimal and I would double my RAM and storage. But I am afraid of PeerTube’s consumption when it comes to bandwidth. As in: if I upload a video that for some reason becomes really popular, or if a bad actor decides to DDOS my channel, would that take down all my other self-hosted Fediverse instances? Since they are on the same VPS?

I could limit potential issues by having a dedicated VPS just for PeerTube.

What would you do?

And do you have recommendations for Europe-based VPS’s with affordable plans? (aside from Hostinger) I was thinking of #Hetzner…

Bonus capture jumping the queue today because I'm burning with curiosity:

What caused the damage to this tree's bark in this patterned fashion? Was the lower rupture likely made by the same force?

Putting these questions to all the woodspeople, forest folk, ecologists, biologists, botanists, entomologists, and other science hippies in the Fediverse. Please scratch my itch 🙏

(P.S. No, I didn't capture any other images of the tree; and, no, I can't positively ID the tree. I'm terrible with tree ID. An alder? A young...something or other? Sorry 🙇)

So, when I follow a Peertube user from my Mastodon-account, and that user publishes a new video, but the video doesn't show up on my Mastodon feed, what's likely to be the cause of that?

It has worked fine for previous videos.

I'm looking to make a few minor changes to Mastodon using custom CSS, but I'm not sure how to target e.g. bgcolor for the light mode without impacting the dark mode. Anyone got any pointers? I can't find anything useful online.

Is there some fedi account I can follow which will tell me when there is space stuff I should go outside and look up at?

I hate missing stuff like auroras :/

It would have to be something where one can follow an account specific for the area one lives in, Denmark in my case.

@FediTips, I’m having a lot of trouble with the mastodon iPhone app where all of a sudden while reading a toot the screen jerks and I’m pushed to 5 or 10 posts down. I have to scroll back up to continue reading what I was before being interrupted. Then it happens again. I’m suspecting this is possibly because some of the posts with links render a preview and causes all posts under it to realign vertically. Is this a known issue? Any recommendations? #askfedi #Mastodon

#AskFedi bc I need a refresher:

Were there, or were there not, studies during the *designated pandemic years (2020-21)* (/s) re: #Covid19 + #ClimateChange impact on gut health, with one major symptom being something like the stomach flu?

If anyone has the links and receipts, PLEASE REPLY!

Even a local newspaper here in West Bengal, India, carried a headline recently re: the outbreak of a kind of stomach flu, with symptoms such as lack of appetite, exhaustion, indigestion, and diarrhoea. My BFFs are down with it, and I am, too. And yesterday the news announced an oncoming heat wave this weekend 🫠

Masking is sporadic here, almost rare. I still mask up, but ~ it does get difficult to breathe in a mask at 12:30 PM at 36°C ~ especially when chronic pain makes it hard for me to breathe even at home. Outside, there's also significant shaming and peer pressure to NOT mask up.

And as always, it's way worse for people with #Disabilities and #ChronicIllness (for instance: me), but people in this ableist, fascist hellhole of a country never want to talk about it.
