My country has banned Discord, any good alternatives?

Self-Host Weekly (3 October 2025)
#Immich finally goes stable, software updates and launches, a spotlight on #Cially - #Discord insights and analytics, and more in this week's #selfhosted recap!
You may (or may not) recall the #Freenode takeover mess. However, thanks to #IRC being an open and widely supported protocol, many projects migrated to #LiberaChat with as little disruption as possible.
Good news is, your walled garden is unlikely to suffer the fate of Freenode — because it already is there, from day one. What are you going to do when your project suddenly gets banned and you lose access to everything — including all the data that you shouldn't have kept there in the first place? Of course, come up with some corporate bullshit of "join us on our illustrious journey to the next walled garden, and don't forget to install another 200 MiB privacy nightmare app not to be excluded from our community".
Question for the #fediverse . Is there a discord alternative that's not owned by any corporate entity?
I know many people who are aware of the importance of #FreedomRespecting software, data, and culture - and the related issues of digital sovereignty and privacy.
Paradoxically, a lot of these people also participate in, or even maintain, communities hosted on #nonfree / #proprietary / #restricted or #centralized platforms like #Telegram, #Discord, #WhatsApp, #Signal, #Instagram, #Facebook, #Twitter, #LinkedIn, #Bluesky, #GitHub, and others.
To state the obvious, each community which chooses a proprietary platform - or bridges to it - is also giving another reason for others to be on that platform. It’s reinforcing network effect.
Conversely, if these communities chose to move to free platforms, their members would be forced to move as well. In other words, these communities have the opportunity to push for change on a massive scale.
Sure, you have to reach out to people on proprietary platforms, if that’s where the majority are. But you cannot be stopping there - you must have a strategy to move people away from proprietary platforms to free platforms.
To give the example of #OpenStreetMap -
So to these spineless people who are choosing and effectively promoting proprietary platforms, I ask…
How do you think things are going to change, if everyone keeps choosing what is easiest for them, and keeps choosing, supporting, and promoting proprietary platforms?
What part are you playing in making things better? Or are you just going to go with the flow of the world, even if you know it to be wrong?
They don’t like answering these questions.
Instead, I invite them to find the integrity and courage to answer them.
Or, to find the integrity and courage to make the obvious change and do the obvious right thing.
People hate it when I bring this up. Sorry, but my conscience dictates that I speak up for what is right. Silence is complicity, and it gets us nowhere.

In other news, XMPP Spaces is making good progress. I hope within a reasonable amount of time we‘ll be able to provide a viable alternative, so people don’t have to end up like that.
Today in ransomware, Slack increases pricing by $195k with a week's notice for a non-profit that teaches teenagers how to code.
"His private discord post"
My brother in christ if a corporate app or service's literal only hard security feature is that it uses SSL it simply is not private.
Assume all of your Meta, Discord, Telegram etc messages can be read in near realtime by proud boys with badges i. Trump's regime.

> Why do foss communies use Discord or Reddit. Why Telegram?
All equally good questions. Not only do these too have perfectly usable Free Code replacements, they're also decentralised.
For Discorpse/ Telegrim there's XMPP and Matrix apps, and public rooms can be made available via both (and IRC). For dReddit, there's Lemmy and PieFed, which federate over ActivityPub, making them part of the fediverse.
In world political news that went under the radar over the past few days: the government of #Nepal has been overthrown by youths following a governmental move to block social media, and accusations of corruption.
A new PM was elected over #Discord, and has been accepted by the military. They aim to hold elections within 6 months.
I repeat:
THEY ELECTED A NEW GOVERNMENT
OVER
DISCORD.
And no second ammendment was needed to rise up against against tyranny.

it happens literally all the time. it's maddening. discord is essentially unusable on my phone. i keep getting so fucking angry i feel like breaking my phone. please help me
my app is fully updated. what the fuck is going on
What's this
#Nepali coordinating #revolution on #Discord, almost 10,000 on one conference call
They're calling it the "#GenZ" #protests. It was sparked by a crackdown on #SocialMedia but the base frustration is #corruption, #nepotism, #unemployment, and #inequality. 19 protesters were killed on Monday, I'll spare you a viewing of that video, and Tuesday #Parliament and the #SupremeCourt were set on fire. The prime minister has resigned. The government has fled.

Just listening to the Destination Linux podcast episode 435, and hearing them talk about their issues and experiences with Matrix... It does not sound good
So question is: what other projects exist out there that are open-source, and could be good alternative to Matrix/Discord? A federated solution would be nice ofc.

Email about changes to Discord's ToS, 2025
In plain terms, you can like it or leave. But at the same time, they'll do anything they can to make it hard to leave. This is what dictatorship looks like.
Hello, all current #Discord users! They're changing their Terms of Service at the end of September, which means you have 30 days to opt out of the Agreement to Arbitrate in Section 16 of the new ToS:
All you need to do is send email from the one you used to register for Discord to arbitration-opt-out@discord.com and let them know you would like to opt out. Why?
Because binding arbitration is only good for large corporations, not individuals.

This is the way #Skiddies on #discord "hack" each other for over a decade now...
Discord is once again, for the 8th or more time this year, updating their privacy policy, and terms of services.
I DELETED my account today.
Goodbye, Discord.
