I just posted this at work and it seems like not everyone knows this.

You can take the Amtrak Coast Starlight from Seattle, Portland, Sacramento, Oakland, San Jose or LA in the other direction, to the Monterey Bay aquarium. On Amtrak.com, simply put Monterey Bay Aquarium as your destination and when you arrive in Salinas station at 12:20pm (daily), there will be a bus that waits for you and picks you up to send you to the doors of the Aquarium by 1:30pm (usually takes just 20min)

For a true car-free experience, book a hotel room in New Monterey near the Aquarium, like the Clement Intercontinental, Monterey Plaza, or Wave Street Inn or anything on that side of the tunnel (including Pacific Grove). You can walk / bike the coastal trail.

Rent a bike from Work Horse bicycles downtown.

If you bring your own bike on the train (check in without boxing!) you can put it on MST city bus no 20, the bus station is 5 min ride away. Wait at and have a taco at Tacos Don Beto next door. There is a small outdoor area for Covid cautious folks.

Bike tip: a great thing about bicycling is you can always get off your bike and become a pedestrian. So if road conditions ahead look scary, dismount and walk your bike on the sidewalk til you get to a place you feel comfortable again. You still save time vs. walking the whole way, and can ease into urban riding. #bikeTooter

@pete @ascentale @xtaran @bikenite question: does anyone have"watts" numbers for towing a trailer with loads? I keep hearing"it's too hard" . For example someone said that 200 lbs of cargo was too much, yet an adult can weigh nearly that much, i.e. on a tandem. So I know that yes it's harder, but is it really that much harder? Also, it would give us better numbers to understand how many watts an ebike needs to offset the additional drag. #BikeNite #BikeTooter

And lastly @xtaran asks:

Q8. For Cycle Week in Zurich, we wanted to tow a car with bicycles to symbolically free a former rarely-used highway tunnel from cars (it will be open for bicycles during the festival)

Sadly the city deemed that idea too dangerous due to steepish ramps. (We considered that to be the challenge 🙂)

Have you ever towed a car with a bicycle or done something similarly odd?

@grammasaurus has a fit/geometry question:

Q5. I’m thinking of buying a folding bike, so I tried a friend’s Brompton. But something about the distance between the bike seat and the handlebars felt really uncomfortable, so I did a semi-deep dive into “bike geometry“.

Do other people use measurements and angles when looking at different kinds of bikes? Or is bike geometry is only useful to bike builders?

I sewed a stem bag for my bike and I'm really excited about it! It's my first time sewing one and I made up the pattern so I'm pretty delighted with how it came out.

I used bits of a bag I disassembled for parts, some fabric my mom gave me (the green turkey tail mushroom print fabric) and bands I wove.

There are some things I'll do differently next time, like probably making the bottom square instead of a circle, and making some slightly different fabric choices, like not waxing the lining and drawstring sleeve fabric. And maybe I'll add some ease to the pocket, which can't really fit anything when my water bottle is in there on this one.

I went to my dentist today, and as I approached the building I saw a UPS deliver truck blocking the lane of traffic. But I quickly realized what the driver had done: he'd avoided blocking the adjacent cycleway! When I got to the door of the dentist, I saw the driver approaching with a package. I stopped him, and told him how much I appreciated how he had stopped on the road and how he had not blocked the cycleway. He seemed to welcome that. Acknowledging folks is good 😀🚴🏼‍♀️❤️

"When a participant who had initially requested an e-trike dropped out of the program, BEEP organizers faced some difficulties finding a final participant with enough storage space to fit the e-trike.

The trike sat unused for about 6 weeks, ultimately finding a new home with a participant with mobility and balance issues in Sept. 2023 with help from the West Berkeley-based Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program" #Berkeley #BikeTooter

Here’s what happened when Berkeley gave free e-bikes to 56 residents

"“[The e-bike] helps me discover things in my community…like classes at the Berkeley wellness center,” reads a quote in the report from participant Cam Yuen. Another participant wrote in his quarterly survey that he no longer uses his car for short trips."
