It was on this day 36 years ago when @timbl submitted his proposal to CERN for an "information management system", precursor to the World Wide Web.

"In the proposal, Berners-Lee modestly spoke of wanting to use hypertext, a.k.a. links, to help CERN deal with information storage issues.

[...]

His boss’s response?

“Vague, but exciting.”"

Here's the actual proposal, from info.cern.ch/Proposal.html

A piece of history.

@stefan this led me down an interesting rabbit hole! I saw that this image mentioned "hyper card" and I didn't realize the term existed before "HyperCard"

@liaizon Ha, noticed that too, very interesting!

@stefan @liaizon initial release of HyperCard was 1987 and this is dated later!

@wysiwyggins @stefan oh good catch! I was looking for any mention of the backstory behind Bill naming HyperCard but I didn't find anything. I did find this good podcast though which I am now on the 5th episode of: macfolkloreradio.com/2023/07/0

@liaizon @stefan definitely people had been talking about hypertext since the mother of all demos, but the origin of “card” would be a good indicator of who was influencing who.

@liaizon @stefan @HXLNT and I had a thought experiment for some art projects about an alternate reality with some AppleTalk-descended networking instead of tcp-ip and HyperCard as the first browser

@liaizon @stefan HyperCard is newer than 1989? When is it from?
