wow the peertube instance I had an account on and had used a bunch over the last few years is seemingly gone without any notice. it was at betamax.video and was managed by @debugninja@banana.dog (also an instance thats gone now?) did they ragequit or something?
the importance of picking a server whos admin you trust is really an underrated aspect of the fediverse we need to work on... I mostly chose it for the cool domain name and the custom theme...
@liaizon I had the same with peertu.be on which I started putting some videos for work, and which eventually vanished also without a warning (or i missed it, i don't know)
@yhancik this is something we really need to expect to happen and build some sort of mechanism to make sure people have some warning at least
@liaizon I don't know if Peertube has "server announcements" like Mastodon does, by this is something that you should be able to subscribe to by e-mail. But that probably won't fix all things, as sometimes these are just unplanned. It's one of the joy of decentralisation, I guess ;)
@yhancik I personally don't think thats enough. Maybe a mechanism that lets a server send out an SOS to other servers to offer the users losing a home a new space and automatically grab their videos.
@liaizon there could even be a dead person's switch ;)
But it also probably needs some human-based solutions; it's a pity the responsibility of a server used by a relatively important number of people is all on one individual. And I'm saying that first of all sympathising with those who are the sole admin of instances. I'm sure some of them wouldn't mind sharing the burden.
@yhancik I think it is indeed mostly a social problem. If I had known in time they didnt want to host the server I would have happily taken it on and done the hosting myself or even payed them to keep running it.
