Between #gardening and #pottery, I’ve found so much use for free wood scraps. There’s just so much scrap wood out there from felling trees, woodworking and shipping pallets. Just make sure the wood is untreated. I got these scraps from a local woodworker that I’ll use in my outdoor #rocketkiln and for backyard fires. Also got a bag of sawdust which I’ll use to saggar fire pottery and to add carbon to my #compost. 🧵

I made a #zine sharing my experiments and explorations collecting and using #wildclay to decorate my pottery as a way to encourage others to dabble with free, local materials in an easy, non-technical way. I share process, recipes and insights, letting you into my studio practice. Lots of photos of clay samples & test tiles. Available in print or digital (including a printer spread so you can print and make your own zine.)

Trimmed a bunch of gaiwan lids (I re-threw them yesterday, the first round were small). Clearly made extras - but I wasn't sure what i'd like best.

Started on the teacups, but not happy about the size variation. Need to get better at measuring, or make myself a gauge.

#pottery (in progress)

Made an important #pottery tool today. shrinkage rulers! Different clay bodies shrink when drying and being fired. So this ruler will shrink and you can use this ruler with a standard ruler and make good estimations about how your project will change.

Whenever I have new #pottery ready, I send an email to my subscribers. It’s a way for me to communicate with people who want to buy my work and it’s also a place to express myself in more than 500 characters since I like to write. I describe my process, explain the thoughts behind certain pieces, share my inspirations, etc. If you’d like to sign up, visit my website.

Being a potter means drawing from a vocabulary of tried-and-true forms: mugs, teapots, bowls, pitchers, etc. However, these archetypal forms have European & Asian origins.

I thought it would be interesting to everyone & affirming to other Black ceramicists to reference #African forms in contemporary tableware. The combining of European, Asian and African ceramics traditions goes back to mid-20th century, but that history is omitted from US #ceramic education. See #alttext for details. #pottery

Did some trimming on this guy today, and decided to leave the slight chattering marks from the trimming tool. Looking at the photo I want to touch-up the neck-to-rim transition:

It's a reclaim mix of brown clays, I'll be curious to see how it come out.
