MKBHD talking about the fediverse. This is a big deal, I am surprised I hadn't seen anymore mention this until now. This is like John Oliver or Oprah talking about the fediverse in terms of the reach he has.

@liaizon
That was insightful TBH.
They know very little about fediverse and clearly haven't thought about it much.

EG, it took them a while to get to realising that interconnectivity doesn't mean distinct platforms, settings and apps don't exist.

This was when they argued that distinct places/platforms are actually good. They didn't even get to the point of thinking about simply having *different accounts* for different "voices", just as we do for X/IG/YT, which is pretty dumb.

@liaizon

Then the concern about analytics and all of that ... while I'm sure it's relevant to "creators", was somewhat alarming, especially given their open admission that marketing isn't really on top of that stuff anyway.

Of course the empowerment of the average user to pick a platform and the creator who wants to be able to easily move around without losing their audience ... these are mentioned really only in passing.

Very obvious they're accustomed to being shills for platforms TBH.

@liaizon

And of course, moderation, which is really the whole story about the fediverse ... is not mentioned *once*. But they've got dad jokes about cheese and the "feta-verse"!

I'd come to think very little of MKBHD, but to see him just kinda say "but muh platforms" without really thinking it through, as though the internet never happened, reveals IMO what he really is and what these mega-platforms have created.

@maegul @liaizon
This.
And the most scary thing I noticed is they seemed to only think about the Fedi in terms of "How can we use it to market content ?".

@Zekovski @maegul @liaizon That is his entire career. It’s like saying Ford engineers only think about making cars.

@ClickyMcTicker @maegul @liaizon
Well, I didn't know who these people are.
It doesn't thrill me honestly. Everytime I see big marketing teams touch something I care about with a commercial intent, it doesn't end well.

@maegul @liaizon Yeah it was interesting to see the dichotomy between their "creator brain" and "consumer brain". As a creator, the first thought was: "But I post on LinkedIn differently from YouTube. How would that work?". As a consumer they immediately went "Oh yeah, I *would* want to have the 3rd party client world again!" And then that opened the gateway of "Ah okay so then we can expect them to handle followers like this and comments like that, etc etc"

@person72443 @liaizon

Consumer v creator brain ... great way to capture it!

It was weird to see that there's dissonance there for them ... and kinda not realise that the existence of that dissonance is itself a phenomenon worth addressing.

@maegul @liaizon Yeah, definitely. I wonder if age is a factor. If you only saw the tail end of the "protocol-first" internet era, the possibilities may not be as intuitive?

I'm imagining like "Salt water ocean. Okay, interesting. And how do frogs work?"
"Frogs? We don't have frogs. Our goal is to rehabilitate the coral reefs."
"The what??"

@person72443 @maegul I like how far these analogies are getting away from the OP

@liaizon @shubhankar_91 Ooh is this from the newest episode? Last week they talked about it but not very in-depth, and mostly Marques didn’t have much idea about it.

@liaizon it's a really bummer that the fediverse expert couldn't make it.
Many of the "mastodon is one thing for everything from LinkedIn to 4chan" could have been clarified right there...

@liaizon @shubhankar_91 That Feta joke in the beginning was pretty cheesy
