The Dialup Café's marchintosh globaltalk node says goodnight for another year! thank you to all of the goofballs that dumped calling cards in the shared folder.

i sadly was able contribute very little to the festivities this year due to a chain of random illnesses. next year i am very much looking forward to having a lot more fun!

and of course, the globaltalk kiki at globaltalk.network will remain up permanently for your contributions. the editing password is marchintosh2025, and welcomes your new pages and macintosh knowledge.

With #MARCHintosh coming to a close, here's a copy of my "Master List" that shows all the #GlobalTalk zones I've been able to reach, and if they've received my calling card and print job or not.

If you haven't received my calling card or a print job from me yet, let me know! It may be the case that I'm not able to reach your zone for some reason (some have read-only shares without a drop box, others don't have any shares show up at all).

It's also possible there's a few cases where I marked a print job as successfully sent when it actually wasn't, so let me know if you want one and I'll send it off after work today 🙂

I've also tried to deduplicate in cases where I know the same person operates multiple zones (i.e. Airaga/WOzFest HQ, Cloudbusting/Digitopolis) - but it's possible I've missed some others there as well.

I noticed the retro Mac community was working on #GlobalTalk and although I'm not working on anything, I thought I'd contribute this suggestion: If you're using AppleShare on Mac OS 7.6 or later, you might want to use the AppleShare client extension that shipped with Mac OS 9.2.2. That's AppleShare version 3.9.2.

One of the last things I worked on in Mac OS 9 was the AppleShare client that shipped in Mac OS 9.2.2. The AppleShare team had moved on to work on Mac OS X and because I'd supported AppleShare while in Developer Technical Support and had worked on the AppleShare client for Mac OS 9.0 to make it work with the File Manager changes in 9.0, I got the job.

The bug I was given to fix was poor Finder performance when a user opened multiple directories simultaneously on an AppleShare volume. However, after fixing that bug, I kept going. :)

What follows in this thread is a list of things I changed:

Taking the #GlobalTalk Scavenger Hunt baton...

This is what I have when placing the clue’s words in order:

1 COPLAND
10 [ASC|ASSC|LACS]?
11 OUR
100 BRIGHT
101 S?????? [SKIES]?
110 AHEAD

And, as previously posted by Scott, the limerick is:

In the bird as dark as night,
configuration may be a fright,
but as you seek supplementary aids, go dig under

OldBytes Space - MastodonScott Small 🇨🇦 (@smallsco@oldbytes.space)Content warning: #GlobalTalk scavenger hunt roundup

There is a new alpha version of #GlobalTalk chat available on Blackbird.

This new version 0.3 uses a lower level of AppleTalk communication instead of HyperCard's built-in Process-to-Process communication method.

This lower level method is asynchronous and can wait for results without locking up the UI, so hopefully it solves the massive lag issues people have been having.

If anyone is around right now to test it out, please do!

So, here's my actually-planned-for-this-year #MARCHintosh project. Attached is a photo of four very dusty containers full of floppy disks. These are the actual disks from my childhood IIfx!

Most of these disks aren't original. The originals lived at Dad's workplace. He would periodically bring home software from work, make a copy of the disks, and return the originals to work. These were, I'm told, the "off-site backups", in case there was a fire at the workplace or something like that. But we also had all this software installed on the family IIfx so Dad could read any files that he brought home from work with him.

Of course, we also bought our own software for the home, and those are mixed in with these disks as well. And that stack of CD-ROMs in the top left are my MacAddict cover disks - those are already archived.

Anyway, because these are just consumer-grade diskettes, they degrade quicker than the professionally-manufactured original ones. I've already lost a few, so I want to get these archived! And of course, anything that doesn't already exist on the Garden will be uploaded there and shared on #GlobalTalk as well.

(expect this to be a long-ass foone-style thread with lots of updates over several days)

New #GlobalTalk print job from @theirongiant , featuring a beautiful rendering of the Newton user interface!

(and thanks for the reminder about the iOS/macOS updates - I'll be bringing my node down after work today so I can update macOS on the Mini that's running QEMU)

EDIT: reposted, image didn't attach to the original for some reason?

Also I got all the info keyed in properly so if you're connected to #GlobalTalk, you can now access... DA SHAREZONE on my trashpicked Centris 650.
