I just discovered something suuuper cool! If you have a domain on gandi.net it comes with a server already set up for free linked to your domain! Why is that cool? Well if you dont want google or apple to know who is in your address book on your phone you can set up an alternative host for it. I just got it set up on this Mac I am using for some work stuff after finding this page docs.gandi.net/en/gandimail/so

www.gandi.netGandi.net: Domain Names, Web Hosting, SSL Certificates➤ Email, web hosting, SSL certificate ✅ It all begins with a domain name ✅ Buy the perfect domain name among our 750 extensions!

I got it working on iOS but its not working yet on macOS X Contacts for some reason.

@liaizon oh wow.. I might just cancel my nextcloud vps I have with them.. seems like overkill all of a sudden..
Thanks for sharing!

@woozong I have been using their webmail for years and somehow never thought to look for cardDAV and calDAV in the same area!

@woozong @liaizon I think they also offer for free 5Go CozyCloud instance for each domain

@Arco @woozong wow thanks for shareing this I hadn't even heard of CozyCloud, I see they are also AGPL which is awesome. I haven't seen them mentioned in the same places people talk about NextCloud for some reason

@liaizon @Arco
Cool! Cozycloud is new for me too.. will have a look 🤙

@woozong @Arco there seems to me so much good french floss tech that I don't know about because most of the PR is probably not anglocentric

@liaizon @woozong Haha that's sad ;) But to be honest I haven't used CozyCloud or even Nextcloud myself (yet)😅

@Arco @liaizon
I have the feeling it's a EU thing.. we get blasted constantly by US products and platforms (not to mention series, movies, etc..).. our search-engines are US.. so how would we easily find EU products and platforms?
I found Gandi a couple of years back by chance.

@liaizon Neat! I use my Fastmail account for this, it also hosts notes iOS can sync natively
Every Zap channel has their own CalDAV/CardDAV and WebDAV server, FWIW. It's just an extra service we provide our members for the reasons mentioned.

@zap I think I remember hearing you say that before! I really want to play with that. I just logged into zap.dog but I don't see how to manage a contacts list or where the cardDAV settings are

There are no settings or UI. These aren't required. You manage the entries from any of your external devices and the builtin CalDAV or CardDAV server keeps them all synced.

From most devices just add a new CalDAV or CardDAV server with the URL https://$yoursite/cdav and login with your channel username and account password.

If the device or app doesn't do discovery (most do) you might need to use https://$yoursite/cdav/calendars/$username or https://$yoursite/cdav/addressbooks/$username . If you open these with a web browser you won't see anything but that doesn't mean anything - these are DAV endpoints and weren't intended to be accessed by humans.
